Paclobutrazol 23% w/w (25% w/v) SC:
Paclobutrazol 23% w/w (equivalent to 25% w/v) SC is a potent, systemic Plant Growth Regulator (PGR) belonging to the triazole group, formulated as a Suspension Concentrate (SC). It is primarily used to manipulate the growth and development of fruit trees, most notably Mango. By inhibiting the synthesis of gibberellins (plant hormones responsible for cell elongation), it restricts vegetative growth and diverts the plant's energy toward reproductive growth. This results in the induction of flowering, making it the industry standard for managing "alternate bearing" (irregular fruiting cycles) in mango orchards.
Mode of Action:
Paclobutrazol functions as a Gibberellin Biosynthesis Inhibitor.
Vegetative Suppression: Upon application (usually to the soil), it is absorbed by the roots and transported via the xylem to the growing tips. It inhibits the production of gibberellins, which reduces internode length and stops excessive leaf and branch growth.
Flowering Induction: By suppressing vegetative growth, the tree's energy and assimilates are redirected toward flower bud differentiation and fruit development.
Canopy Management: It results in a more compact, manageable canopy, allowing better light penetration and easier harvesting.
Primary Uses and Target Crops:
While it can be used on various crops, its primary and most critical application is in fruit orchards.
Key target crops include:
Fruit Trees: Mango (Major use), Pomegranate, Citrus, Apple
Vegetables: Onion, Garlic, Potato (to increase bulb/tuber size by reducing top growth)
Flowers: Ornamental plants (to keep them compact)
Application and Dosage:
For Mango (Soil Application / Collar Drench):
The dosage depends strictly on the age of the tree and the diameter of the canopy. Overdosing can stunt the tree permanently.
Timing: Apply 3 to 4 months before the expected flowering season (typically July–August in India) after the harvest of the previous crop.
Method: Dig a small trench (furrow) 5–10 cm deep around the trunk base (collar region). Mix the required quantity of Paclobutrazol in 2–5 liters of water and pour it uniformly into the trench. Cover with soil and irrigate.
Dosage Rule of Thumb:
7 to 15-year-old trees: approx. 10 to 15 ml per tree.
16 to 25-year-old trees: approx. 15 to 20 ml per tree.
Trees > 25 years: approx. 20 to 30 ml per tree.
(Note: Always consult the specific label or an agronomist, as canopy size matters more than just age).
For Vegetables (Foliar Spray):
Onion/Garlic/Potato: To improve bulb/tuber size, use 5 to 8 ml per 15-liter tank (approx. 50–80 ml per acre). Apply 40–50 days after sowing/planting.
Target Benefits:
As a PGR, this product targets plant physiology rather than pests.
Key benefits include:
Regular Bearing: Induces flowering in mango trees that otherwise bear fruit only every alternate year.
Early Flowering: Promotes early and uniform flowering, allowing for an early harvest and better market prices.
Yield Increase: Increases fruit set and retention.
Drought Tolerance: Treated trees often develop darker green leaves and better water use efficiency.
Compactness: Reduces excessive vegetative growth, making pruning and harvesting easier.
Safety Precautions:
Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential. Paclobutrazol residues persist in the soil.
Key safety recommendations include:
Dosage Precision: Do not overdose. Excessive application can cause severe stunting, leaf curling, and tree deformity.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear gloves and boots during soil drenching to avoid skin contact.
Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands thoroughly after use.
Environmental Safety: Do not apply near water bodies. Use caution to prevent runoff.
Storage:
Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
