Sulfosulfuron 75% WG:
Sulfosulfuron 75% WG is a selective, systemic, post-emergence herbicide used for controlling grassy and broadleaf weeds, particularly in cereal crops. The "WG" stands for Water Dispersible Granules, a formulation that dissolves quickly in water to form a spray solution.
Mode of Action:
Sulfosulfuron belongs to the sulfonylurea group of herbicides (Group B). It is absorbed through the foliage and roots of the weeds and then translocated throughout the plant. Its mode of action is the inhibition of the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS), which is essential for the biosynthesis of critical amino acids (isoleucine, leucine, and valine). This inhibition stops cell division and plant growth, leading to the death of susceptible weeds. Weeds will appear stunted soon after application, though it may take several weeks for them to die completely.
Primary Uses and Target Crops:
This herbicide is primarily used for selective weed control in:
Wheat
Triticale
Application and Dosage:
Sulfosulfuron 75% WG is applied as a post-emergence spray when weeds are young and actively growing.
Timing: For wheat, it is typically applied 30-35 days after sowing when the primary target weed, Phalaris minor, is at the 2-4 leaf stage. Best results are often seen when applied after the first irrigation when the soil has adequate moisture.
Dosage: A common recommended dosage is approximately 13.3 grams of the formulation per acre (about 33.3 grams per hectare).
Mixing: It should be mixed with a non-ionic or cationic surfactant to improve its adherence and effectiveness on the weed's foliage. A typical mix involves dissolving 13.5 grams of the product in water, adding 500 ml of surfactant, and then diluting the total solution in 80-120 liters of water to spray one acre.
Equipment: Application should be done using a knapsack sprayer fitted with a flat fan or flood jet nozzle.
Target Weeds:
This herbicide is effective against a range of problematic weeds in wheat fields.
Grassy Weeds:
Phalaris minor (Canary grass)
Wild Oat
Broadleaf Weeds:
Chenopodium album (Lambsquarters)
Melilotus spp. (Sweet Clover)
Safety Precautions:
Adherence to safety protocols is essential when handling and applying this herbicide.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, including gloves, a hat, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and shoes. Eye protection is also recommended.
Handling: Avoid inhaling the spray mist and prevent contact with skin and eyes. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during application. Wash hands and face thoroughly with soap and water after handling.
Environmental Safety: The product is toxic to aquatic life and should not be allowed to contaminate water bodies. Avoid spraying near sensitive intercropped broadleaf crops like mustard or gram.
Crop Rotation: Due to its residual activity in the soil, certain crops like sorghum and maize should not be planted immediately after a wheat crop that has been treated with Sulfosulfuron.
Storage:
Store the product in its original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Keep it away from food, animal feed, children, and unauthorized persons.
