Cypermethrin 25% EC:

Cypermethrin 25% EC is a highly active, broad-spectrum synthetic pyrethroid insecticide formulated as an Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC). It belongs to the Pyrethroid ester group and is widely known for its rapid "knockdown" effect against a variety of difficult-to-control pests, particularly lepidopteran larvae (caterpillars). It acts as a contact and stomach poison, making it effective against biting, chewing, and boring pests in numerous agricultural crops. Its strong contact action ensures that pests stop feeding immediately upon exposure, minimizing crop damage.

Mode of Action:

Cypermethrin 25% EC functions primarily through contact and stomach action.

  1. Nerve Disruption: It acts on the insect's nervous system by disrupting the sodium channels in the nerve cell membranes.

  2. Hyperexcitation: This disruption prevents the transmission of nerve impulses, causing repetitive firing of the nerves.

  3. Paralysis and Death: The continuous nerve stimulation leads to hyperexcitation, paralysis, and the eventual death of the insect. Its quick action makes it excellent for controlling mobile pests and larvae.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This insecticide is widely used in field crops and vegetables to control bollworms, borers, and other chewing pests.

Key target crops include:

  • Fiber Crops: Cotton

  • Vegetables: Okra (Bhindi), Brinjal (Eggplant), Cabbage, Cauliflower, Tomato

  • Cereals: Maize, Wheat

  • Oilseeds: Groundnut, Sunflower, Mustard

  • Commercial Crops: Sugarcane

Application and Dosage:

Cypermethrin 25% EC is mixed with water and applied as a foliar spray. Thorough coverage of the foliage is critical for effective control.

The recommended dosage varies by crop and pest intensity:

  • Cotton: To control Bollworms (American, Spotted, Pink), use 200 to 300 ml per acre.

  • Okra (Bhindi): For Shoot and Fruit Borer and Jassids, use 200 to 250 ml per acre.

  • Brinjal: To control Shoot and Fruit Borer and Epilachna Beetle, use 200 to 250 ml per acre.

  • Cabbage/Cauliflower: For Diamondback Moth (DBM) and borers, use 250 to 300 ml per acre.

  • General Mixing Rate: A common mixing rate is 1 ml to 1.5 ml per liter of water. Ensure the spray solution covers the target pests effectively.

Target Pests:

This insecticide is highly effective against lepidopteran (caterpillar) pests and certain sucking pests.

Commonly controlled pests include:

  • Bollworms (American, Spotted, Pink)

  • Shoot and Fruit Borer

  • Diamondback Moth (DBM)

  • Jassids

  • Thrips

  • Epilachna Beetle

  • Leaf Folders

  • Bihar Hairy Caterpillar

Safety Precautions:

Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential. Cypermethrin is toxic to bees and aquatic organisms.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, goggles, and a face mask during mixing and spraying. Avoid skin contact, as pyrethroids can cause a temporary burning or itching sensation.

  • Bee Safety: Do not apply during the active flowering stage or when honeybees are foraging.

  • Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use.

  • Environmental Safety: This product is highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Do not apply directly to water bodies or clean equipment near streams or ponds.

Storage:

Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed.[1] Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
