Profenofos 40% + Cypermethrin 4% E.C.:
Profenofos 40% + Cypermethrin 4% E.C. is a broad-spectrum, non-systemic combination insecticide formulated as an Emulsifiable Concentrate. It brings together two active ingredients from different chemical groups to provide effective control over a wide range of chewing and sucking insect pests in various crops. This product is known for its strong contact and stomach action, delivering a quick knockdown of pests and offering long-lasting residual protection.
Mode of Action:
This insecticide features a dual mode of action, which helps in managing pest resistance. The two components attack the insect's nervous system through different pathways.
Profenofos: As an organophosphate insecticide, Profenofos acts by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase in the insect's nervous system. This leads to an accumulation of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, causing overstimulation of the nerves, which results in paralysis and the eventual death of the pest.
Cypermethrin: This synthetic pyrethroid modulates the sodium channels in the nerve cells. It prevents the channels from closing, which disrupts the normal transmission of nerve impulses, leading to hyperexcitation, convulsions, paralysis, and death of the insect.
This synergistic combination makes the product highly effective against hard-to-kill pests. It also exhibits excellent translaminar activity, meaning it can control pests on both the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves.
Primary Uses and Target Crops:
This combination insecticide is versatile and used across a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops.
Key target crops include:
Cotton
Soybean
Rice
Vegetables such as cabbage, okra, tomatoes, and brinjal
Pulses
Various fruit crops
Application and Dosage:
For best results, this insecticide should be applied as a foliar spray at the early stages of pest infestation.
Dosage: The recommended dosage generally ranges from 400-600 ml per acre. This should be diluted in 200-400 liters of water per acre for high-volume spraying. A common mixing rate for smaller applications is 30-50 ml per 15-liter pump.
Application Method: A knapsack sprayer or foot sprayer can be used. It is important to ensure uniform coverage of the plant canopy. Applications can be repeated at an interval of 10-15 days, depending on the pest incidence.
Target Pests:
This insecticide is effective against a broad spectrum of both chewing and sucking pests, and also has good acaricidal (mite-killing) properties.
Commonly controlled pests include:
Bollworm complex (in cotton)
Aphids
Jassids
Whiteflies
Thrips
Shoot and Fruit Borers
Leaf Folders
Caterpillars and Beetles
Safety Precautions:
Proper handling and safety measures are crucial when using this product.
Key safety recommendations include:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear full protective clothing, including gloves, masks, and eye/face protection, during mixing and application.
Avoid Contact and Inhalation: Avoid contact with skin and eyes, and do not inhale the spray mist.
Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling the product. Wash hands and face thoroughly with soap and water after use.
Environmental Safety: The product is very toxic to aquatic life. Do not apply it near water bodies or during heavy rainfall to avoid runoff.
Storage:
Store the insecticide in its original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. It should be kept away from direct sunlight, heat, food, and animal feed, and out of the reach of children.
In case of poisoning, symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, and excessive salivation. It is critical to seek immediate medical attention. Atropine and 2-PAM can be used as antidotes under medical supervision.
