Pendimethalin 30% EC:

Pendimethalin 30% EC is a selective, pre-emergence herbicide formulated as an Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC). It belongs to the dinitroaniline chemical class. It is designed to control annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in a variety of crops before they emerge from the soil. By creating a chemical barrier on the soil surface, it prevents weed competition during the critical early stages of crop growth, ensuring the crop gets maximum nutrients, water, and sunlight. It is one of the most widely used herbicides for Soybean, Wheat, Cotton, and Onion.

Mode of Action:

Pendimethalin 30% EC functions as a mitosis inhibitor.

  1. Cell Division Blockage: It works by inhibiting cell division (mitosis) in the developing root and shoot systems of weed seedlings. specifically by binding to tubulin and preventing microtubule formation.

  2. Growth Stoppage: As weed seeds germinate and attempt to push through the treated soil layer, their root and shoot growth is stunted.

  3. Death: The weed seedlings die shortly after germination or emergence due to the inability to grow. It does not kill established weeds; it only prevents new ones from growing.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This herbicide is safe for use in a wide range of field crops, vegetables, and pulses, provided it is applied before the crop and weeds emerge (or pre-transplanting).

Key target crops include:

  • Cereals: Wheat, Rice (Transplanted & Dry Seeded)

  • Oilseeds: Soybean, Groundnut, Mustard, Sunflower

  • Fiber Crops: Cotton

  • Pulses: Pigeon Pea (Red Gram), Black Gram, Green Gram, Chickpea

  • Vegetables: Onion, Garlic, Cumin, Coriander, Cabbage, Cauliflower

Application and Dosage:

Pendimethalin 30% EC is mixed with water and applied as a soil spray.

  • Timing is Critical: It must be applied within 0 to 3 days of sowing, but before the crop and weeds emerge. For transplanted crops, apply immediately before transplanting (PPI) or 0-3 days after transplanting.

  • Soil Moisture: Adequate soil moisture is necessary for the herbicide to activate and form the protective layer.

Recommended Dosage:

  • Soybean, Cotton, Groundnut: Use 1.0 to 1.5 liters per acre.

  • Wheat: Use 1.0 to 1.2 liters per acre.

  • Onion/Garlic: Use 1.0 to 1.2 liters per acre.

  • Rice: Use 1.0 to 1.5 liters per acre.

  • Method: Mix the required quantity in 200 to 250 liters of water per acre. Use a Knapsack sprayer fitted with a Flat Fan or Flood Jet nozzle to ensuring uniform coating of the soil surface. Do not disturb the soil after application.

Target Weeds:

This herbicide is effective against a broad spectrum of annual weeds.

Commonly controlled weeds include:

  • Grassy Weeds (Narrow Leaf): Phalaris minor (Canary Grass/Gulli Danda), Echinochloa spp. (Barnyard Grass), Eleusine indica, Setaria spp.

  • Broadleaf Weeds: Chenopodium album (Bathua), Amaranthus spp. (Chaulai), Portulaca oleracea, Trianthema spp. (Carpet weed), Euphorbia spp.

Safety Precautions:

Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, and a face mask/goggles during mixing and spraying.

  • Application Safety: Avoid walking through the treated field immediately after spraying to maintain the chemical barrier.

  • Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use.

  • Environmental Safety: This product is toxic to fish. Do not apply directly to water bodies or clean equipment near fish ponds or streams.

Storage:

Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
