Mesotrione 2.27% + Atrazin 22.7% SC:

Mesotrione 2.27% + Atrazine 22.7% SC is a selective, broad-spectrum herbicide formulated as a Suspension Concentrate (SC). It is designed for the control of a wide range of broadleaf and grassy weeds in maize and sugarcane. This premixed combination offers both pre-emergence and post-emergence activity, providing effective weed management during the critical early stages of crop development.

Mode of Action:

This herbicide combines two active ingredients with different modes of action, creating a synergistic effect for enhanced weed control.

  • Mesotrione: Belongs to the HPPD inhibitor group (Group 27). It is absorbed through the roots and foliage and translocates throughout the plant. Mesotrione works by inhibiting the 4-HPPD enzyme, which is essential for carotenoid biosynthesis. This disruption leads to the bleaching or whitening of susceptible weeds, ultimately causing their death.

  • Atrazine: Is a photosystem II (PSII) inhibitor. It is primarily absorbed through the roots and also by the foliage, moving upwards within the plant. Atrazine blocks the electron transport process in photosynthesis, which starves the weeds of the energy needed for growth.

The dual-action of this combination helps in managing a broad weed spectrum and also serves as a tool for resistance management.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This herbicide is specifically recommended for use in:

  • Maize (Corn)

  • Sugarcane

It is effective as both a pre-emergence and an early post-emergence application to control weeds before they can compete with the crop for resources like water, nutrients, and light.

Application and Dosage:

For optimal results, this herbicide should be applied when weeds are in their early stages of growth, typically at the 2-4 leaf stage.

  • Dosage: The recommended dosage for foliar application is approximately 1400 ml per acre. This can be mixed with about 500 liters of water per hectare.

  • Application Method: It should be applied as a spray, ensuring uniform coverage of the weeds. A knapsack sprayer with a flat fan or flood jet nozzle is recommended. The product has good rain fastness, becoming effective even if it rains 2-3 hours after application.

Target Weeds:

This combination provides effective control against a wide array of annual grassy and broadleaf weeds, including:

  • Trianthema spp. (Horse Purslane)

  • Amaranthus viridis (Pigweed)

  • Digitaria sanguinalis (Crabgrass)

  • Echinochloa colona (Jungle Rice)

  • Dactyloctenium aegyptium (Crowfoot Grass)

  • Cyperus spp. (Sedges)

  • Parthenium hysterophorus (Carrot Grass)

  • Chenopodium album (Lamb's Quarters)

Safety Precautions:

As with all agrochemicals, it is essential to follow safety guidelines when handling and applying this product.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear protective gear, including a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, chemical-resistant gloves, and shoes with socks.

  • Avoid Contact: Avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of contact, rinse the affected area immediately with plenty of water.

  • Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling the product. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after use.

  • Environmental Safety: This product can be toxic to aquatic life. Do not apply it directly to water bodies, and prevent contamination of water sources when cleaning equipment.

Storage:

Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Keep it away from food, animal feed, and out of the reach of children.

In case of poisoning, seek medical attention immediately. Treatment is symptomatic as no specific antidote is known.[5]
