Fipronil 0.6% w/w GR:
Fipronil 0.6% w/w GR is an advanced, broad-spectrum systemic insecticide belonging to the phenylpyrazole group, formulated as Granules (GR). Containing a higher concentration of the active ingredient compared to the standard 0.3% formulation, it offers potent control against stem borers and leaf folders with a lower application rate per acre. It acts through both contact and ingestion (stomach action). Beyond pest control, it is widely appreciated for its "Plant Growth Enhancement" (PGE) effect, which results in greener leaves, better root development, and increased number of productive tillers.
Mode of Action:
Fipronil 0.6% w/w GR targets the insect's central nervous system:
GABA Interference: It works by blocking the GABA-gated chloride channels in nerve cells.
Hyperexcitation: This blockage prevents the uptake of chloride ions, leading to an excess of neuronal stimulation. The insect suffers from hyperexcitation of the nerves, followed by severe paralysis and death.
Systemic Translocation: When broadcast in the field, the active ingredient is released from the granules, absorbed by the plant roots, and translocated upwards to the stems and leaves, protecting the plant from internal borers and external feeders.
Primary Uses and Target Crops:
This granular insecticide is specifically designed for ease of use in paddy and sugarcane farming to control stubborn boring pests.
Key target crops include:
Rice (Paddy)
Sugarcane
Wheat
Corn (Maize)
Application and Dosage:
Fipronil 0.6% GR is applied directly to the soil by broadcasting. It can be applied by hand or using a fertilizer spreader.
The recommended dosage varies by crop:
Rice (Paddy): To control Yellow Stem Borer and Leaf Folder, use 4 kg per acre.
Timing: Apply between 15 to 25 days after transplanting (DAT). Maintain standing water of 2–3 cm for best results.
Sugarcane: For Early Shoot Borer and Root Borer control, use 6 kg to 8 kg per acre.
Timing: Apply 45 days after planting along the crop rows and follow with light irrigation.
General Application: Ensure uniform distribution across the field. Mixing with sand or fertilizer is usually not necessary due to the specific granule size/dose ratio (e.g., the 4kg pack is often designed as a single-acre dose), but check the specific product label.
Target Pests:
This insecticide is highly effective against lepidopteran borers and certain sucking pests.
Commonly controlled pests include:
Yellow Stem Borer (Rice)
Rice Leaf Folder
Early Shoot Borer (Sugarcane)
Root Borer
Green Leaf Hopper (GLH)
Brown Plant Hopper (BPH)
Gall Midge
Whorl Maggot
Termites
Safety Precautions:
Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential. Fipronil is toxic to aquatic life and beneficial insects like bees.
Key safety recommendations include:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, and a mask during application to prevent skin contact and inhalation of dust.
Avoid Contact: Do not handle the granules with bare hands. Wash any dust from the skin immediately with soap and water.
Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands and face thoroughly after application.
Environmental Safety: This product is toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Do not use in aquaculture ponds or allow runoff into natural water bodies.
Storage:
Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
