Fipronil 5% SC:

Fipronil 5% SC is a modern, broad-spectrum systemic insecticide belonging to the phenylpyrazole chemical family, formulated as a Suspension Concentrate (SC). It is highly effective against a wide range of chewing and sucking pests in various agricultural crops. It works through both contact and stomach action. Apart from its potent insecticidal properties, it is also known for its "Phytotonic" (plant growth enhancement) effect, which helps in increasing root growth, inducing greener leaves, and ultimately resulting in higher yields.

Mode of Action:

Fipronil 5% SC targets the insect's central nervous system:

  1. GABA Inhibition: It works by blocking the GABA-gated chloride channels in the nerve cells.

  2. Hyperexcitation: This blockage disrupts the regulation of chloride ions, leading to excessive neuronal stimulation and hyperexcitation of the insect's nerves.

  3. Paralysis and Death: This overstimulation causes severe paralysis and the death of the pest. Being systemic, it is absorbed by the plant and moves to the growing points, protecting new foliage from pest attacks.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This insecticide is widely used in field crops and vegetables to control borers, leaf folders, and sucking pests.

Key target crops include:

  • Cereals: Rice (Paddy)

  • Vegetables: Cabbage, Chili, Cauliflower, Onion

  • Commercial Crops: Sugarcane, Cotton

  • Others: Pulses

Application and Dosage:

Fipronil 5% SC is mixed with water and applied as a foliar spray. Thorough coverage of the plant is essential for optimal control.

The recommended dosage varies by crop and pest severity:

  • Rice (Paddy): To control Stem Borer, Leaf Folder, Green Leaf Hopper (GLH), and Gall Midge, use 400 to 600 ml per acre.

  • Cabbage: For Diamondback Moth (DBM), use 320 to 400 ml per acre.

  • Chili: To control Thrips, Aphids, and Fruit Borers, use 320 to 400 ml per acre.

  • Sugarcane: For Early Shoot Borer and Root Borer, use 600 to 800 ml per acre (often applied as a drench).

  • Cotton: For Bollworms, Whiteflies, and Thrips, use 400 to 600 ml per acre.

  • General Mixing Rate: A common mixing rate is 1.5 to 2 ml per liter of water. Shake the bottle well before use.

Target Pests:

This insecticide is effective against a broad spectrum of pests, including difficult-to-control caterpillars and sucking insects.

Commonly controlled pests include:

  • Stem Borer (Rice, Sugarcane)

  • Leaf Folder (Rice)

  • Diamondback Moth (DBM)

  • Thrips

  • Aphids

  • Whiteflies

  • Green Leaf Hopper (GLH)

  • Brown Plant Hopper (BPH)

  • Root Borer

  • Termites (when applied as a soil drench)

Safety Precautions:

Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential. Fipronil is toxic to aquatic organisms and bees.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, and a face mask/goggles during mixing and spraying to avoid skin contact and inhalation.

  • Bee Safety: Do not apply when honeybees are actively foraging, as it is toxic to pollinators.

  • Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use.

  • Environmental Safety: This product is toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Do not apply directly to water bodies or allow runoff into fish ponds.

Storage:

Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
