Fipronil 0.3% GR:

Fipronil 0.3% GR is a modern, broad-spectrum insecticide belonging to the phenylpyrazole chemical family, formulated as Granules (GR). It is highly effective against a wide range of soil-dwelling and foliar pests in various crops. Known for its systemic and contact action, it provides long-lasting control and is particularly valued for its ability to manage pests that have developed resistance to other classes of insecticides. Additionally, it often exhibits a "Phytotonic" effect, enhancing root growth and increasing the number of productive tillers, which contributes to higher yields.

Mode of Action:

Fipronil 0.3% GR functions primarily through contact and ingestion (stomach action).

  1. GABA Inhibition: It works by blocking the GABA-gated chloride channels in the insect's central nervous system.

  2. Hyperexcitation: This blockage disrupts the normal flow of chloride ions, leading to excessive neuronal stimulation, hyperexcitation of the insect's nerves, paralysis, and ultimately death.

  3. Systemic Activity: When applied to the soil, the active ingredient is absorbed by the plant roots and translocated upwards, protecting the plant from stem borers and leaf feeders.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This granular insecticide is widely used in field crops to control boring, sucking, and chewing pests.

Key target crops include:

  • Rice (Paddy)

  • Sugarcane

  • Wheat

  • Corn (Maize)

  • Vegetables (e.g., Chili, Cabbage)

Application and Dosage:

Fipronil 0.3% GR is designed for easy soil application by broadcasting. It can be applied alone or mixed with sand or fertilizers (like Urea) for uniform distribution.

The recommended dosage varies by crop:

  • Rice (Paddy): To control Stem Borer, Brown Plant Hopper (BPH), Green Leaf Hopper, and Leaf Folder, use 6 to 10 kg per acre. It should be applied 15–30 days after transplanting in standing water (2–3 cm deep).

  • Sugarcane: For Early Shoot Borer and Root Borer, use 10 to 13 kg per acre. Apply near the root zone during the early vegetative stage and earth up.

  • Wheat: To control Termites, use 8 kg per acre.

  • General Application: Broadcast the granules uniformly over the field. Ensure there is adequate moisture in the soil at the time of application to facilitate the release of the active ingredient.

Target Pests:

This insecticide is effective against a broad spectrum of difficult-to-control pests.

Commonly controlled pests include:

  • Yellow Stem Borer (Paddy)

  • Brown Plant Hopper (BPH)

  • Green Leaf Hopper (GLH)

  • Rice Leaf Folder

  • Gall Midge

  • Early Shoot Borer (Sugarcane)

  • Root Borer

  • Termites

  • Whorl Maggot

Safety Precautions:

Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential. Fipronil is toxic to aquatic organisms and bees.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, and a face mask during application to avoid skin contact and inhalation.

  • Avoid Contact: Do not allow the granules to come into contact with eyes or skin Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling.

  • Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke while applying the product.

  • Environmental Safety: This product is highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Do not apply directly to water bodies (other than paddy fields as directed) or allow runoff to contaminate streams or ponds. It is also toxic to honeybees; avoid application when bees are actively foraging.

Storage:

Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
