Pyriproxyfen 10% EC:

Pyriproxyfen 10% EC is an insecticide with an Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC) formulation that belongs to the pyridine group of chemicals. It functions as an insect growth regulator (IGR) and is particularly effective against a variety of sucking insect pests. Its unique mode of action makes it a valuable tool in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.

Mode of Action:

Pyriproxyfen 10% EC acts as a juvenile hormone analog, mimicking the natural hormones in insects that regulate their growth and development. It operates through contact, stomach, and translaminar action. The insecticide disrupts the life cycle of pests in several ways:

  • Suppresses Embryogenesis: It prevents eggs from hatching.

  • Inhibits Metamorphosis: It interferes with the molting process, preventing larvae and nymphs from developing into adults.

  • Causes Sterility: Adult insects that come into contact with the product may become sterile, or the eggs they lay will be non-viable.

This disruption of the reproductive and developmental processes leads to a gradual decline in the pest population.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This insecticide is used for the control of sucking pests on a wide range of crops. It is known for its selectivity, meaning it has a low toxicity to beneficial and predatory insects when used as directed.

Key target crops include:

  • Cotton

  • Chilli

  • Brinjal

  • Okra

  • Various other vegetables and fruits

Application and Dosage:

For optimal results, Pyriproxyfen 10% EC should be applied with a fine spray, ensuring thorough coverage of the foliage, including the undersides of leaves where pests like whiteflies are often found. It is best to apply it at the early stage of pest incidence.

The recommended dosage varies by crop and pest:

  • Cotton: For whitefly control, the dosage is typically 400-560 ml per acre. Another source suggests 200 ml per acre.

  • Chilli, Brinjal, and Okra: For pests like whiteflies, aphids, and jassids, the recommended dosage is around 200 ml per acre.

  • General Application: A common mixing rate is 1 to 2 ml per liter of water.

Always follow the product label for specific application instructions.

Target Pests:

Pyriproxyfen 10% EC is highly effective against various sucking pests, particularly:

  • Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci)

  • Aphids

  • Jassids

  • Thrips

  • Scale Insects

Safety Precautions:

Proper safety measures are essential when handling and applying this product. It may cause moderate eye and skin irritation.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear protective clothing, chemical-resistant gloves, and safety goggles or a face shield.

  • Avoid Contact and Inhalation: Avoid contact with skin and eyes, and do not breathe in the spray mist.

  • Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke during application. Wash hands and face thoroughly with soap and water after handling.

  • Environmental Safety: This product is toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Do not contaminate water sources, and avoid applying directly to water.

Storage:

Store the insecticide in its original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of reach of children and away from food, drink, and animal feed.

In case of poisoning, seek immediate medical attention. Treatment is symptomatic as there is no specific antidote.
