Emamectin Benzoate 5% SG:
Emamectin Benzoate 5% SG is a modern, high-potency insecticide formulated as Soluble Granules (SG). Derived from a naturally occurring soil bacterium (Streptomyces avermitilis), it belongs to the avermectin class of insecticides. It is widely recognized for its exceptional efficacy against the Lepidopteran family of pests (caterpillars, borers, and worms) at very low dosage rates. It exhibits strong "translaminar" activity, meaning it penetrates leaf tissues and creates a reservoir of active ingredient within the leaf, providing long-lasting protection against pests that feed on both the upper and lower surfaces.
Mode of Action:
Emamectin Benzoate 5% SG functions primarily through ingestion (stomach action) and exhibits some contact activity.
Nerve Disruption: It works by stimulating the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and binding to chloride channels in the insect's nerve cells.
Paralysis: This binding causes a continuous flow of chloride ions into the muscle cells, leading to muscle paralysis.
Stop Feeding: Upon ingestion, the larva stops feeding immediately (within hours) and becomes paralyzed. Although the pest may remain on the plant for a few days, it causes no further damage and eventually dies of starvation.
Primary Uses and Target Crops:
This insecticide is a leading solution for controlling caterpillars and borers in vegetables, pulses, and fiber crops.
Key target crops include:
Fiber Crops: Cotton
Vegetables: Okra (Bhindi), Brinjal (Eggplant), Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chili, Tomato
Pulses: Red Gram (Pigeon Pea), Bengal Gram (Chickpea)
Commercial Crops: Soybean, Tea
Fruits: Grapes
Application and Dosage:
Emamectin Benzoate 5% SG is mixed with water and applied as a foliar spray. Due to its high potency, the required dosage is very low.
The recommended dosage varies by crop:
Cotton: To control American Bollworm, Spotted Bollworm, and Pink Bollworm, use 80 to 100 grams per acre.
Okra (Bhindi): For Fruit and Shoot Borer, use 68 to 80 grams per acre.
Cabbage & Cauliflower: For Diamondback Moth (DBM), use 60 to 80 grams per acre.
Chili: To control Fruit Borer and Thrips/Mites, use 80 grams per acre.
Red Gram/Chickpea: For Pod Borer (Helicoverpa), use 80 to 100 grams per acre.
Brinjal: For Fruit and Shoot Borer, use 80 grams per acre.
General Mixing Rate: A common mixing rate is 0.5 grams per liter of water. Dissolve the granules completely in water before spraying.
Target Pests:
This insecticide is highly specialized for the control of caterpillar pests (Lepidoptera).
Commonly controlled pests include:
Bollworms (American, Spotted, Pink)
Fruit and Shoot Borer
Diamondback Moth (DBM)
Pod Borer (Helicoverpa armigera)
Tobacco Caterpillar (Spodoptera litura)
Semi-loopers
Leaf Folders
Thrips (suppression)
Safety Precautions:
Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential. This product is highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates.
Key safety recommendations include:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, and a face mask/goggles during mixing and spraying.
Avoid Contact: Avoid inhalation of spray mist and contact with skin and eyes. Wash splashes immediately with soap and water.
Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly after use.
Environmental Safety: Do not apply directly to water bodies or clean equipment near streams or ponds, as it is dangerous to aquatic life.
Storage:
Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
