Metalaxyl 35% WS:

Metalaxyl 35% WS is a highly active, systemic fungicide formulated as a Water Dispersible Powder for Slurry (WS). It is specifically designed as a seed dresser to protect crops from soil-borne and seed-borne fungal diseases. Its systemic nature allows it to be absorbed by the seed and translocated into the growing seedling, providing long-lasting protection during the critical early stages of crop development.

Mode of Action:

Metalaxyl 35% WS acts as a systemic fungicide with both protective and curative properties.

  1. RNA Synthesis Inhibition: It works by inhibiting the synthesis of protein (specifically interfering with the synthesis of ribosomal RNA) in the fungal cells. This disruption prevents spore germination and mycelial growth, effectively killing the fungus.

  2. Systemic Translocation: When applied to seeds, the active ingredient is absorbed by the roots and translocated upward to the stems and leaves of the young plant (acropetal movement), protecting new growth from infection.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This fungicide is primarily used as a seed treatment to protect field crops and vegetables from Oomycete fungi (water molds).

Key target crops include:

  • Cereals: Maize, Bajra (Pearl Millet), Sorghum, Wheat

  • Oilseeds: Sunflower, Mustard

  • Vegetables: Peas, Potatoes, Tomatoes

  • Others: Sugarcane, Tobacco

Application and Dosage:

Metalaxyl 35% WS is applied as a wet slurry to seeds before sowing.

The recommended dosage varies by crop, but general guidelines are:

  • Maize, Bajra, Sorghum: To control Downy Mildew, use 6 to 7 grams per kg of seeds (approx. 600–700g per 100 kg seeds).

  • Sunflower: For Downy Mildew control, use 6 grams per kg of seeds.

  • Mustard: To prevent White Rust, use 6 grams per kg of seeds.

  • Slurry Preparation: Mix the required quantity of Metalaxyl 35% WS with a small amount of water (approx. 10–20 ml per kg of seed) to form a slurry. Add this slurry to the seeds and mix thoroughly until every seed is uniformly coated. Dry the seeds in the shade before sowing.

Target Diseases:

This fungicide is highly effective against diseases caused by air and soil-borne pathogens, particularly those affecting seedlings.

Commonly controlled diseases include:

  • Downy Mildew (Sorghum, Maize, Bajra, Sunflower)

  • Damping Off (Vegetable nurseries)

  • White Rust (Mustard)

  • Late Blight

  • Seed Rot

Safety Precautions:

Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential. The product is harmful if swallowed or inhaled.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, and a face mask when mixing the slurry and handling treated seeds.

  • Avoid Contact and Inhalation: Do not breathe the dust. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling.

  • Handling Treated Seeds: Do not use treated seeds for food, feed, or oil extraction. Bags containing treated seeds should be clearly marked "Poison."

  • Environmental Safety: This product is toxic to aquatic life. Do not clean equipment near water bodies.

Storage:

Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
