Carbofuran 3% C.G.:

Carbofuran 3% C.G. is a broad-spectrum, systemic carbamate insecticide and nematicide formulated as Coated Granules (CG) or Encapsulated Granules. This advanced formulation technology encapsulates the active ingredient, making it safer to handle and allowing for a controlled release of the chemical. It is highly effective against a wide range of soil-dwelling and foliar pests, including nematodes, in various agricultural crops. Its "phytotonic" effect is also known to improve root growth and overall plant health.

Mode of Action:

Carbofuran 3% C.G. functions through systemic, contact, and stomach action.

  1. AChE Inhibition: It works by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the insect's nervous system. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, causing continuous nerve transmission, paralysis, and eventually the death of the pest.

  2. Systemic Protection: When applied to the soil, the granules release the active ingredient, which is rapidly absorbed by the plant roots. It is then translocated upwards through the xylem to the stem and leaves, providing comprehensive protection against boring and sucking pests from the inside out.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This granular insecticide is extensively used for the control of difficult pests like stem borers, shoot flies, and nematodes in field crops, vegetables, and fruits.

Key target crops include:

  • Cereals: Maize, Rice (Paddy), Bajra (Pearl Millet), Sorghum, Wheat

  • Cash Crops: Sugarcane, Cotton, Jute, Tobacco, Groundnut

  • Vegetables: Brinjal (Eggplant), Bhindi (Okra), Tomato, Chili, Potato, Cabbage

  • Fruits: Apple, Citrus, Banana, Peach

Application and Dosage:

Carbofuran 3% C.G. is applied directly to the soil, often by broadcasting or spot application near the root zone.

The recommended dosage varies significantly by crop and target pest:

  • Rice (Paddy): To control Stem Borer, BPH, Gall Midge, and Hispa, use 10 kg per acre (approx. 25 kg per hectare).

  • Maize: For Shoot Fly and Stem Borer control, use 13 kg per acre (approx. 33 kg per hectare).

  • Sugarcane: To control Top Borer and Early Shoot Borer, use 13 kg per acre (approx. 33 kg per hectare).

  • Bajra: For Shoot Fly control, a higher dosage of 20 kg per acre (approx. 50 kg per hectare) is often recommended.

  • Vegetables (Tomato/Chili): For Whiteflies, Aphids, and Nematodes, use 16 kg per acre.

  • Apple: To control Woolly Aphid, apply 166 grams per tree near the root zone.

  • Method: Apply the granules by broadcasting them uniformly in the field or applying them in furrows. Ensure adequate soil moisture (or standing water in paddy) at the time of application to facilitate the release and absorption of the active ingredient.

Target Pests:

This insecticide is effective against a broad spectrum of insects and nematodes.

Commonly controlled pests include:

  • Borers: Stem Borer (Yellow, Pink), Top Borer, Early Shoot Borer

  • Sucking Pests: Brown Plant Hopper (BPH), Green Leaf Hopper (GLH), Aphids, Thrips, Whiteflies

  • Soil Pests: Root Knot Nematodes, Cyst Nematodes, Reniform Nematodes, White Grubs, Termites

  • Others: Shoot Fly, Gall Midge, Leaf Miner, Woolly Aphid

Safety Precautions:

Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential as Carbofuran is a toxic chemical.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, and a face mask/respirator during handling and application.

  • Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, chew tobacco, or smoke during application. Avoid touching the granules with bare hands. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use.

  • Environmental Safety: This product is highly toxic to birds, fish, and honeybees. Do not apply where runoff is likely to occur or near water bodies.] Ensure the granules are properly incorporated into the soil to prevent ingestion by birds.

Storage:

Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, under lock and key. Keep away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed.[1] Keep out of reach of children and unauthorized persons.
