Validamycin 3% L:

Validamycin 3% L is a systemic antibiotic fungicide formulated as a liquid. Produced through fermentation, it is highly specific and effective against soil-borne diseases caused by Rhizoctonia fungi. It is widely regarded as the most reliable solution for controlling Sheath Blight in Rice. Being an antibiotic fungicide, it has a low toxicity profile for mammals and is environmentally safer than many synthetic alternatives. It acts on the fungal hyphae, stopping the infection without damaging the plant.

Mode of Action:

Validamycin 3% L functions as a fungistatic agent (stops fungal growth) rather than a fungicidal agent (killing immediately).

  1. Enzyme Inhibition: It specifically inhibits the enzyme trehalase within the fungal cells.

  2. Energy Starvation: The fungus requires trehalase to digest trehalose (a carbohydrate) for energy. By blocking this enzyme, Validamycin effectively starves the fungus of energy.

  3. Hyphal Disruption: It causes abnormal branching at the tips of the fungal hyphae, preventing the fungus from spreading and penetrating further into the plant tissue.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This fungicide is primarily used in Rice cultivation but is also effective in potatoes and vegetables.

Key target crops include:

  • Cereals: Rice (Paddy)

  • Tubers: Potato

  • Vegetables: Tomato, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Ginger

  • Others: Tea, Coffee

Application and Dosage:

Validamycin 3% L is mixed with water and applied as a foliar spray. Thorough coverage of the lower parts of the plant (sheaths) is crucial for rice.

The recommended dosage varies by crop:

  • Rice (Paddy): To control Sheath Blight (Rhizoctonia solani), use 400 to 500 ml per acre.

    • Timing: Apply at the first appearance of sheath blight symptoms or during the tillering to booting stage.

  • Potato: For Black Scurf, use 2.5 ml per liter of water as a spray or seed treatment.

  • Vegetables: For Damping Off and Root Rot, use 400 to 500 ml per acre.

  • General Mixing Rate: A common mixing rate is 2 ml to 2.5 ml per liter of water.

Target Diseases:

This fungicide is highly specialized for Rhizoctonia species.

Commonly controlled diseases include:

  • Sheath Blight (Rice - Major target)

  • Black Scurf (Potato)

  • Damping Off (Vegetable seedlings)

  • Root Rot

  • Web Blight

Safety Precautions:

Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential. As an antibiotic, it requires careful handling.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, and a face mask/goggles during mixing and spraying.

  • Avoid Contact: Avoid inhalation of spray mist and contact with skin and eyes. Wash splashes immediately with soap and water.

  • Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use.

  • Environmental Safety: While it has low toxicity to fish, do not contaminate water bodies or clean equipment near streams or ponds.

Storage:

Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
