Isoprothiolane 40% EC:
Isoprothiolane 40% EC is a specialized systemic fungicide formulated as an Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC). It is primarily used in Rice (Paddy) cultivation for the effective control of Blast disease. Apart from its potent fungicidal properties, it is widely recognized for its unique "phytotonic" (plant growth-promoting) effects. It accelerates root development, enhances nutrient absorption, and prevents physiological disorders, leading to healthier plants and improved grain quality. It acts as both a curative and preventive agent.
Mode of Action:
Isoprothiolane 40% EC functions as a Lipid Biosynthesis Inhibitor.
Membrane Disruption: It inhibits the biosynthesis of phospholipids (specifically phosphatidylcholine), which are essential components of the fungal cell membrane.
Infection Blockage: It specifically inhibits the formation of infection pegs and the elongation of fungal hyphae, preventing the fungus from penetrating and colonizing the plant tissue.
Insect Suppression: Uniquely, it also exhibits a suppressive effect on the population build-up of plant hoppers (BPH/WBPH), reducing their ability to feed and breed.
Primary Uses and Target Crops:
This fungicide is the "Gold Standard" for Blast management in Rice but is sometimes used in other crops.
Key target crops include:
Cereals: Rice (Paddy)
Application and Dosage:
Isoprothiolane 40% EC is mixed with water and applied as a foliar spray. It is most effective when applied at the early stages of disease development or preventively at the booting stage.
The recommended dosage is:
Rice (Paddy): To control Leaf Blast, Neck Blast, and Node Blast, use 300 to 400 ml per acre.
Timing:
Leaf Blast: Apply at the first sign of lesions on leaves.
Neck Blast: Apply at the panicle initiation or booting stage to prevent neck infection.
General Mixing Rate: A common mixing rate is 1.5 ml to 2 ml per liter of water. Ensure thorough coverage of the foliage.
Target Diseases:
This fungicide is highly specific to the Magnaporthe fungus.
Commonly controlled diseases include:
Rice Blast (Leaf Blast, Neck Blast, Node Blast)
Stem Rot (Suppression)
Secondary Benefits:
Plant Health: Promotes vigorous root growth and reduces leaf senescence (yellowing).
Pest Suppression: Helps in keeping the population of Brown Plant Hoppers (BPH) under check when used regularly.
Safety Precautions:
Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential.
Key safety recommendations include:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, and a face mask/goggles during mixing and spraying.
Avoid Contact: Avoid inhalation of spray mist and contact with skin and eyes. Wash splashes immediately with soap and water.
Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use.
Environmental Safety: This product is toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Do not apply directly to water bodies (other than paddy fields as per recommendation) or allow runoff into fish ponds.
Storage:
Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
