Buprofezin 25% SC:

Buprofezin 25% SC is a highly effective Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) insecticide formulated as a Suspension Concentrate (SC). Belonging to the thiadiazine group, it is specifically designed to control sucking pests like hoppers, whiteflies, and mealybugs. Unlike substantial "knockdown" insecticides that kill adults immediately, Buprofezin works by disrupting the molting process of young insects (nymphs).  It is an excellent choice for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs as it is relatively safe for beneficial insects and helps in managing resistance against conventional insecticides.

Mode of Action:

Buprofezin 25% SC functions primarily through contact and stomach action as a Chitin Synthesis Inhibitor.

  1. Molting Inhibition: It inhibits the biosynthesis of chitin, a vital component of the insect's exoskeleton (cuticle). This prevents nymphs and larvae from molting into the next stage, causing them to die during the molting process.

  2. Egg Sterilization: It suppresses oviposition (egg-laying) in adults and causes the eggs laid by treated adults to be sterile (unhatched), effectively breaking the pest's reproductive cycle.

  3. Persistence: It has long-lasting residual activity, providing extended protection against pest resurgence.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This insecticide is a specialist solution for managing sucking pests in cereals, vegetables, and fruits.

Key target crops include:

  • Cereals: Rice (Paddy)

  • Fiber Crops: Cotton

  • Vegetables: Chili, Tomato, Brinjal (Eggplant), Okra, Cucumber

  • Fruits: Mango, Grapes, Citrus

Application and Dosage:

Buprofezin 25% SC is mixed with water and applied as a foliar spray. It is most effective when applied at the early nymphal stages of the pest.

The recommended dosage varies by crop:

  • Rice (Paddy): To control Brown Plant Hopper (BPH), Green Leaf Hopper (GLH), and White Backed Plant Hopper (WBPH), use 300 to 350 ml per acre.

    • Timing: Apply when pests are in the early nymphal stage. Direct the spray towards the base of the plant.

  • Cotton: For Whiteflies, Aphids, Jassids, and Thrips, use 400 to 500 ml per acre.

  • Chili: To control Yellow Mites and Thrips, use 300 to 400 ml per acre.

  • Mango: For Mango Hoppers, use 1.5 to 2 ml per liter of water.

  • Grapes: For Mealybugs, use 1.5 to 2 ml per liter of water (approx. 400-600 ml per acre).

  • General Mixing Rate: A common mixing rate is 1.5 to 2 ml per liter of water. Ensure thorough coverage of the foliage, especially the undersides where pests hide.

Target Pests:

This insecticide is highly effective against homopteran pests (sucking insects).

Commonly controlled pests include:

  • Brown Plant Hopper (BPH)

  • Green Leaf Hopper (GLH)

  • White Backed Plant Hopper (WBPH)

  • Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci)

  • Mealybugs

  • Mango Hoppers

  • Jassids

  • Scales

  • Mites (Yellow Mite)

Safety Precautions:

Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, and a face mask/goggles during mixing and spraying.

  • IPM Compatible: It is safe for many beneficial insects and predators, making it suitable for eco-friendly farming.

  • Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use.

  • Environmental Safety: This product is toxic to aquatic life. Do not contaminate water bodies, ponds, or irrigation ditches.

Storage:

Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
