Thiamethoxam 75% SG:

Thiamethoxam 75% SG is a broad-spectrum, systemic insecticide formulated as Soluble Granules (SG).[1] Belonging to the neonicotinoid group, it is highly soluble in water and is specifically designed to provide long-lasting control against sucking and soil-dwelling pests. Upon application, it is rapidly absorbed by the plant's roots and foliage and translocated systemically through the xylem to all parts of the plant. This formulation is particularly valued for its flexibility, as it can be applied via foliar spray, soil drenching, or seedling dip, and is known to exhibit a "phytotonic" effect that improves plant vigor and stress tolerance.

Mode of Action:

Thiamethoxam 75% SG functions through systemic, contact, and stomach action.

  1. Nerve Receptor Agonist: It acts as an agonist to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) in the insect's central nervous system.

  2. Signal Disruption: By mimicking the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, it binds to these receptors and causes continuous, uncontrolled firing of nerve impulses.

  3. Paralysis: This hyperexcitation leads to convulsions, paralysis, cessation of feeding, and the death of the pest. Its strong systemic nature ensures that even pests hiding on the underside of leaves or attacking roots are effectively controlled.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This insecticide is extensively used for root-uptake applications (soil drench/drip) and foliar sprays in field crops and vegetables.

Key target crops include:

  • Commercial Crops: Sugarcane, Groundnut

  • Cereals: Rice (Paddy)

  • Fiber Crops: Cotton

  • Vegetables: Tomato, Brinjal, Potato

  • Fruits: Mango, Citrus

Application and Dosage:

Thiamethoxam 75% SG is versatile and can be applied by drenching, broadcasting with sand/fertilizer, or spraying.

The recommended dosage varies by crop and application method:

  • Rice (Paddy): To control Brown Plant Hopper (BPH), Green Leaf Hopper (GLH), and Stem Borer, use 60 grams per acre.

    • Method: Mix with 8-10 kg of sand or fertilizer and broadcast in standing water.

  • Sugarcane: For Termites and Early Shoot Borer, use 64 to 70 grams per acre.

    • Method: Apply as a soil drench near the root zone.

  • Groundnut: To control Termites and White Grubs, use 50 to 60 grams per acre as a soil drench.

  • Cotton: For Jassids, Aphids, and Thrips, use 40 to 50 grams per acre as a foliar spray or soil application.

  • General Foliar Spray: A common mixing rate is 0.3 to 0.5 grams per liter of water. Ensure uniform coverage.

Target Pests:

This insecticide is highly effective against sucking insects and soil pests.

Commonly controlled pests include:

  • Termites

  • Early Shoot Borer (Sugarcane)

  • Brown Plant Hopper (BPH)

  • Green Leaf Hopper (GLH)

  • Aphids

  • Jassids

  • Thrips

  • Whiteflies

  • White Grubs (suppression)

Safety Precautions:

Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential. Thiamethoxam is toxic to bees and aquatic life.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, and a face mask/goggles during mixing and application.

  • Bee Safety: Do not apply during the active flowering stage or when honeybees are foraging, as neonicotinoids are highly toxic to pollinators.

  • Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use.

  • Environmental Safety: Do not contaminate water bodies, ponds, or irrigation ditches. Do not apply where runoff is likely to occur.

Storage:

Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
