Chlorpyriphos 20% EC:
Chlorpyriphos 20% EC is a time-tested, broad-spectrum organophosphate insecticide formulated as an Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC). It is widely known for its triple-action capability, acting as a contact, stomach, and fumigant poison. This versatility allows it to effectively control a wide range of biting, chewing, and sucking pests, as well as soil-dwelling insects like termites. It acts rapidly ("knockdown" effect) and provides residual protection, making it a staple for pest management in agriculture and for anti-termite treatment in buildings.
Mode of Action:
Chlorpyriphos 20% EC functions as an Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor.
Nerve Disruption: It works by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is responsible for breaking down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the insect's nervous system.
Systemic Failure: This inhibition causes an accumulation of acetylcholine at the nerve synapses, leading to continuous nerve impulse transmission, overstimulation, paralysis, and the eventual death of the pest.
Vapor Action: Its strong fumigant action allows it to penetrate hidden crevices and soil galleries to reach pests like termites and borers that are difficult to target with contact sprays alone.
Primary Uses and Target Crops:
This insecticide is extensively used for crop protection and structural pest control.
Key target crops include:
Cereals: Rice (Paddy), Maize, Wheat
Fiber Crops: Cotton
Commercial Crops: Sugarcane, Oilseeds (Groundnut, Mustard, Soybean)
Vegetables: Brinjal (Eggplant), Cabbage, Cauliflower, Onion, Potato
Fruits: Citrus, Apple, Ber
Non-Crop: Pre-construction and post-construction anti-termite treatment for buildings and forestry.
Application and Dosage:
Chlorpyriphos 20% EC is mixed with water and applied as a foliar spray, soil drench, or seed treatment.
The recommended dosage varies by purpose:
Rice (Paddy): To control Stem Borer, Leaf Folder, Gall Midge, and Hispa, use 500 to 600 ml per acre.
Cotton: For Bollworms, Aphids, and Whiteflies, use 500 to 600 ml per acre.
Sugarcane: For Early Shoot Borer and Root Borer, use 600 to 1000 ml per acre.
Termite Control (Agriculture): For termite management in standing crops, use 1 to 1.5 liters per acre applied with irrigation water or as a soil drench.
Termite Control (Buildings): Dilute 50 ml per liter of water (1 liter in 19 liters of water) to create a 1% emulsion for soil treatment around foundations.
Seed Treatment: Mix 3 to 4 ml per kg of seeds (for crops like Wheat) to protect against soil insects.
General Mixing Rate: For foliar spray, use 2.5 to 3 ml per liter of water.
Target Pests:
This insecticide is effective against a vast spectrum of foliar and soil pests.
Commonly controlled pests include:
Termites (Major target)
Stem Borers
Leaf Folders
Bollworms (Spotted, Pink, American)
Gall Midge
Hispa
Aphids
Root Grubs
Cutworms
Leaf Rollers
Safety Precautions:
Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential. Chlorpyriphos is toxic to mammals, birds, fish, and bees.
Key safety recommendations include:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, goggles, and a face mask during mixing and spraying. Avoid skin contact and inhalation of vapors.
Bee Safety: Do not apply when honeybees are actively foraging.
Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use.
Environmental Safety: This product is highly toxic to aquatic organisms. Do not apply directly to water bodies or clean equipment near streams or ponds.
Storage:
Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep strictly out of reach of children and uninformed persons, preferably under lock and key.
