Potassium Sulphate (NPK 0-0-50):
Potassium Sulphate (NPK 0-0-50), also known as Sulphate of Potash (SOP), is a premium, fully water-soluble fertilizer. It is a rich source of Potassium (50% K₂O) and also contains Sulphur (approx. 17.5% - 18%). Unlike Muriate of Potash (MOP), this formulation is practically free of chloride (Cl) and has a very low salt index, making it the ideal choice for chloride-sensitive crops and for use in saline soils. It is specifically recommended for the final stages of crop growth to enhance the quality, appearance, and shelf life of the produce.
Mode of Action:
Potassium Sulphate functions through systemic absorption and physiological enhancement:
Sugar Transport & Enzyme Activation: The high concentration of Potassium regulates the opening and closing of stomata (water balance) and activates over 60 enzymes responsible for plant growth. Crucially, it facilitates the translocation of sugars and carbohydrates from the leaves to the fruit/storage organs.
Protein Synthesis: The Sulphur content is vital for the synthesis of amino acids (cysteine, methionine) and proteins, which improves the nutritional value of the crop.
Quality Enhancement: The combined action of Potassium and Sulphur improves the synthesis of pigments (color), vitamins, and oils, directly affecting the taste and marketability of the harvest.
Primary Uses and Target Crops:
This fertilizer is widely used for high-value crops, particularly those sensitive to chloride and salt.
Key target crops include:
Chloride-Sensitive Crops: Tobacco, Potato (improves starch content), Grapes, Tea
Fruits: Pomegranate, Banana, Mango, Citrus, Apple, Strawberry, Watermelon, Papaya
Vegetables: Tomato, Onion, Capsicum, Cucurbits, Cabbage, Cauliflower
Flowers: Roses, Gerbera, Carnations
Cash Crops: Sugarcane (increases sugar recovery), Cotton
Application and Dosage:
Potassium Sulphate (NPK 0-0-50) is suitable for foliar spray and fertigation (drip irrigation).
The recommended dosage varies by crop stage (typically used from fruit setting to ripening):
Foliar Spray: Dissolve 5 to 10 grams per liter of water. Apply during the fruit development and ripening stages to boost weight and sugar content.
Fertigation (Drip): Apply 2 to 3 kg per acre. This method ensures the nutrient reaches the active root zone efficiently.
Compatibility: It is compatible with most pesticides and fertilizers but should NOT be mixed with Calcium (Ca) fertilizers (like Calcium Nitrate), as this will cause precipitation (formation of Calcium Sulphate/Gypsum) and clog drip lines.
Target Benefits:
This product is designed to maximize quality and yield parameters.
Key benefits include:
Quality & Taste: Significantly improves fruit size, weight, color, luster, and sweetness (Brix).
Shelf Life: Enhances the keeping quality and storage life of fruits and vegetables.
Starch & Oil Content: Increases starch accumulation in tubers (potatoes) and oil content in oilseeds.
Stress Tolerance: Improves the plant's resistance to drought, frost, and pests.
Safe for Soil: Being low in salt and chloride, it prevents soil salinity buildup and leaf burn in sensitive crops.
Safety Precautions:
Standard safety practices for chemical fertilizers should be followed.
Key safety recommendations include:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling the powder to prevent skin and eye irritation.
Mixing Safety: Always dissolve the powder completely in water. Do not mix with Calcium-based fertilizers in the same tank.
Handling Practices: Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during application.
Environmental Safety: Do not apply directly to water bodies.
Storage:
Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. The product should be kept tightly sealed when not in use to prevent moisture absorption and caking. Keep away from direct sunlight, food, and animal feed.
