Thiamethoxam 25% WG:

Thiamethoxam 25% WG is a second-generation, broad-spectrum systemic insecticide belonging to the neonicotinoid group, formulated as Water Dispersible Granules (WG). It is widely recognized for its superior control over sucking pests in a vast range of crops. Upon application, it is rapidly absorbed by the plant and transported systemically to all parts, ensuring protection against pests that feed on plant sap. It is also known to exhibit a "phytotonic" effect, improving plant vigor, root mass, and ability to withstand stress, leading to greener and healthier crops.

Mode of Action:

Thiamethoxam 25% WG functions through contact, stomach, and systemic action.

  1. Nerve Receptor Agonist: It targets the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) in the insect's central nervous system.

  2. Overstimulation: By mimicking the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, it causes continuous and uncontrolled firing of the nerve impulses.

  3. Paralysis: This hyperexcitation leads to convulsions, paralysis, cessation of feeding, and the death of the pest within a short period. Its strong systemic nature protects new growth that appears after application.

Primary Uses and Target Crops:

This insecticide is a standard solution for managing sucking pests in field crops, vegetables, and plantations.

Key target crops include:

  • Cereals: Rice (Paddy), Wheat

  • Fiber Crops: Cotton

  • Vegetables: Okra (Bhindi), Tomato, Brinjal (Eggplant), Potato, Capsicum

  • Fruits: Mango, Citrus

  • Plantations: Tea

  • Oilseeds: Mustard

Application and Dosage:

Thiamethoxam 25% WG is mixed with water and applied as a foliar spray. It can also be used for soil drenching in some crops.

The recommended dosage varies by crop and pest pressure:

  • Rice (Paddy): To control Stem Borer, Gall Midge, Leaf Folder, Brown Plant Hopper (BPH), and White Backed Plant Hopper (WBPH), use 40 to 60 grams per acre.

  • Cotton: For Jassids, Aphids, Thrips, and Whiteflies, use 40 to 50 grams per acre.

  • Vegetables (Tomato/Brinjal/Okra): To control Whiteflies, Aphids, and Jassids, use 50 to 80 grams per acre.

  • Tea: For Mosquito Bug, use 40 to 50 grams per acre.

  • Potato: For Aphids (foliar spray) or soil drenching, use 40 to 80 grams per acre.

  • General Mixing Rate: A common mixing rate is 0.3 to 0.5 grams per liter of water. Ensure the granules are fully dispersed in water before spraying.

Target Pests:

This insecticide is highly effective against sap-sucking insects (Hemiptera, Thysanoptera, Lepidoptera).

Commonly controlled pests include:

  • Aphids

  • Jassids

  • Whiteflies

  • Thrips

  • Brown Plant Hopper (BPH)

  • Green Leaf Hopper (GLH)

  • White Backed Plant Hopper (WBPH)

  • Mosquito Bug (Tea)

  • Stem Borer (Rice)

  • Gall Midge

  • Psylla (Citrus)

Safety Precautions:

Strict adherence to safety precautions is essential. Thiamethoxam is toxic to bees and aquatic life.

Key safety recommendations include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves, boots, and a face mask/goggles during mixing and spraying.

  • Bee Safety: Do not apply during the flowering stage or when honeybees are actively foraging, as neonicotinoids are highly toxic to pollinators.

  • Handling Practices: Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using the product. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use.

  • Environmental Safety: Do not contaminate water bodies, ponds, or irrigation ditches.

Storage:

Store the product in its original container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and animal feed. Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.
